Franklin School's Soup-er Bowl!

It's that time of the year! Our student council is hosting a "SOUP-ER Bowl" drive in anticipation of Super Bowl Sunday.  We will be collecting cans of soup beginning Tuesday, January 22nd, and ending Friday, January 25th.

We encourage each student to donate at least one can of soup, which we will collect for the benefit of the Saddle Brook Center for Food Action.  The last day of the drive, is also our School Spirit Day!  Please wear sports apparel for school spirit (local, college, or professional teams).

Our teams are:
Team Takach:  KD, 1A, 2A, 3D, 4T, 5M, 6C
Team Gerardi:  KMP, 1K, 2B, 3R, 4K, 5C, 6K

Whichever team brings in the most cans will get to pie the other team leader in the face!  As far as who gets to do the literal "pie-ing" in the face, the student council is in the process of figuring this out.

Author Visit: Joe Shandrowski

This fall, we received a grant from the SBEF for an author visit.  Author Joe Shandrowski will be visiting Franklin School on February 4th.  To find out more information about Mr. Shandrowski, please click here:  http://www.hugatuga.com/authorpage.html.

We will be getting ready for his visit by completing some activities with our students.  His visit is marked as a "Pep Rally for Reading: Literacy Comes Alive!"  .

We will soon begin completing some activities at school in preparation for his visit.  Each student will be going home with an order form this week. This is an opportunity for you to order one or several of the books authored by Joe Shandrowski.  The order form needs to be returned to your child's classroom teacher no later than February 4th.  Here is the order form in case you need another:  Joe Shandrowski's book order form

Kids Heart Challenge (This is the new Jump Rope for Heart!)

In honor of February being American Heart Month, all students will be participating in lessons with Mr. Rogers in their PE classes during the week of February 4th.  Mr. Rogers will be educating our students on how to keep their heart healthy, and will intermix some fun activities such as jump roping & hula hooping!

This is the website to access our school's online donation site:
http://american.heart.org/kidsheartchallenge/.  You need to search Franklin Elementary School, and then there is a red bar to click on to filter by state. Click on NJ and then go to page 2!  Click on the one in Saddle Brook that has Mr. Rogers name next to it!  You will need to create a login for your child to donate.  Then, you are able to share their donation page with others.

Here is the link to the parent resource page:
http://american.heart.org/kidsheartchallenge/for-parents/. Here you will find tips for eating healthy and staying physically fit, as well as resources to assist with any fundraising.  Your child will also be going home with an order form this week, if you prefer to collect donations this way. There are incentive prizes on the website and on the back of the order form.

School Counselor Lessons

Mrs. Byrnes, our school counselor, works closely with me each day.  We work through many different conflicts with our students, and Mrs. Byrnes will often follow up with a lesson in the classroom.  Attached are just some of the lessons Mrs. Byrnes has been able to conduct in your child's classroom so far this school year.  Please take a look at the lessons that your child(ren) has participated in, and ask him/her about it.  Using similar language at home and school will assist with reinforcing the skill!
I also want to acknowledge, Ms. Gonzalez, our school counselor intern. She has worked wonderfully with Mrs. Byrnes and myself throughout this school year.  Here is a link to the lessons:  Lessons by Mrs. Byrnes
